![]() ![]() But that's also such a rare occurence that you know, so what? Frankly stories like that are almost part o the charm of roguelikes provided they're the exception and not the norm. If you are unlucky enough to have one of those very rare decks that actually suffers from dead branch and also to hit the wheel event, have it land on giving you a relic AND roll dead branch then that isn't great. The reward of that many extra cards per combat far offsets the risk that all of them will be bad.ĮDIT: with regards to your point about unskippable relics, there is exactly one way in the entire game I know that you can get a relic and not have the option to skip it and that's the "spin the wheel" event. Often as I said you just get more of what you want or energy. And usually the worst case doesn't even happen. You're not filling your deck with non-synergistic bad cards, at worst you're filling your deck with non synergistic cards that will still at least draw cards when played or powers that you can just put into play and cease worrying about. But of the ones that arent, some will be powers, which means they don't have to bloat your deck at all, and many, many of them will exhaust themselves, which means that they ALSO draw more cards the next time you draw them. No shiv deck will complain about extra cloak and daggers for example. Finally, the cards that dead branch adds are better than they look, a good quarter of them are probably duplicates of cards you want in your deck *anyway*. i genuinely can't think of a time i've ever run out of cards in an exhaust deck. The answer in the majority of cases is no, it isn't more powerful.ģ. That's why Dead Branch is so insane - the cards you get aren't always useful, but they sustain the engine. With this in mind it must be asked, even if what your deck is doing will get negatively affected by Dead Branch, is what your deck is doing in fact more powerful than getting a lot of extra free card draw every fight. Dead Branch makes your deck do a powerful thing, if you're shivving it's making it draw 6-7 free cards per turn, that's powerful! Even a normal deck will probably get 3-4 card draws per combat out of the branch and that's with no synergy at all. ![]() Even if it bloats your deck, it will only ever start to do that on the second shuffle, assuming your decks are normal sized (22-23ish cards on the low end, sometimes quite a bit bigger, 30+, very rarely less than 20 if you have some crazy awesome combo going) it's going to take 4-5 rounds for the second shuffle to happen, maybe 2-3 with card draw but the card draw also helps mitigate the effect of bloat and is less necessary with Dead Branch anyway, a lot of fights have ended by the time you even have to worry about drawing Dead Branch cards.Ģ. That's a lot of card draw! There aren't enough bad cards in the game for that not to benefit you.īut it bloats your deck, right? Weeellll, yes and no. If you're doing something like shivs you may well see 6-7 new cards every turn. This means you are, in effect drawing extra cards random every single turn, some of those will be free, some of those will even GIVE you energy and many of them will be extra copies of cards you want to draw because they synergise with your deck anyway. Yes, it adds random cards to your deck, but let's think about how it does that. I'm going to assume you're still fairly new to the game, and that's fine, but you've fallen into a fairly common misconception about the Branch.ĭead Branch however, is almost always if not pure upside, pretty close to it. As a result, my final turn saw me draw a hand of nothing but shivs when he went for a 3x10 attack.Dead branch is a top tier relic though that I would never even dream of skipping outside of some very fringe cases (going for a very tight infinite combo deck, or trying to make something like grand finale work). Craft a unique deck, encounter bizarre creatures, discover relics of immense power, and Slay the Spire Features. About This Game We fused card games and roguelikes together to make the best single player deckbuilder we could. but I was earning a new shiv every turn, thanks to my power. Slay the Spire is the Roguelike Card Game I Never Knew I Wanted Waypoint. I actually ended up screwing myself - I didn't want to play shivs, since the damage wasn't really good enough to justify the tick on his clock. Would've won, too, but final boss was the Time Eater (or whatever he's called) - bugger hits like a truck, and his 12-tick power/auto-end your turn gimmick messed with my "play ALL the +energy cards" strategy that had been serving me so well up to that point. As a result, I picked up pretty much every power card I happened across - ended up with a pretty great deck - got the "stack 100 points of poison" achievement with it. My latest run, I ended up with the artifact that automatically upgrades any power card you get. It's amazing how much of a difference what artifacts you get can have on a run - especially if you decide to trade out your starting artifact for a new one (the Silent is the best for this, since her +2 cards on opening hand is much weaker than gaining 6 health after every fight). ![]() ![]() The next step is to install the Hyper Terminal application. While Mk3’s tarted-up screens don’t reveal a transformative new layer of functionality (by and large, they visualise the same things operated by the knobs and buttons above and below as their equivalents on Mk2), they make that focal window onto the Maschine software infinitely prettier and more informative than before. Yes, you can edit and step sequence MIDI in the piano roll using just the screens, knobs and pads and although it’s never going to be as quick as using the mouse, the system as a whole absolutely works. Previously the sole preserve - and a major selling point - of Maschine Studio, these are essentially the same 480x272-pixel LED jobs, but with lower power requirements and better viewing angles that go some way to alleviating the aforementioned perpendicular usage issues.Īs with Studio, the new displays bring numerous elements of the software to life directly on the hardware in all their full graphical glory, including the browser, the mixer, the Plug-in Chains, the arrangement, Scenes, and the Pattern and Sample editors. As you’d expect, the established 5-pin MIDI In/Out ports and quarter-inch Pedal input are still in place, too.Ĭlearly, the biggest single change made to Maschine for Mk3 is the addition of those big, colourful dual displays: a massive upgrade from Mk2’s narrow, monochrome dot matrix screens. The headphone out goes very loud indeed - good news for on-stage usage scenarios. Small volume and Gain knobs sit alongside them.Īudio quality is great, and on our test Mac, we got round trip latency as low as 4.24ms at 32 samples, 7.87ms at 128 samples, and 25.3ms at 512 samples. The requisite quarter-inch jack sockets are all located on the back panel: Left and Right TRS Line Ins, Left and Right TRS Line Outs, a dynamic Mic In (there’s no phantom power, and this overrides the Left Line In when connected) and a headphone output. The interface itself is nothing remarkable, being a simple 2-in/4-out setup capable of recording and playback at up to 24-bit/96kHz quality, and appearing as a regular audio interface in your operating system and applications, including, of course, Maschine 2. More importantly, though, it means live performers now have one less box to lug around. Not only does this give those working in small home studios - perhaps with Maschine and an audio interface as their only pieces of external hardware - the option to claim back a bit of desk space. It’s been a notable omission since version 1 of the hardware, but finally, NI has taken the obvious step of building an audio interface into Maschine. Sadly, however, Maschine Mk3 still doesn’t have fold-out legs for angling it to suit seated desktop use - only Maschine Studio gets that embellishment. Oh, and there’s a power button now, so you can turn it off without unplugging it. A power supply is included, for ramping up the brightness of the LEDs, should their bus-powered maximum not be enough. Like Mk2, Maschine Mk3 is USB bus-powered - an impressive achievement, given that it not only incorporates two full-colour screens but also an audio interface (see Wired for sound). ![]() This gives the whole unit a much classier appearance, making the buttons on all other Maschines look comparatively chunky and toy-like. The LED backlit buttons have been overhauled: all but the Group and top-row function buttons are now solid black with cutout lettering allowing the light through. It’s 0.25" longer than Mk2, an inch shallower at its deepest, and weighs 0.4kg more. ![]() ![]() We never had any issue with Mk2’s build quality, but Mk3 takes the device’s physicality to new heights, its all-metal construction, sturdy knobs and firm, clicky buttons putting it right up there with Ableton’s Push 2 - the current controller construction benchmark. Maschine Mk2 made minimal changes to the layout and construction of Mk1, but Maschine Mk3 is a total redesign. ![]() ![]() Most of my time in Persona 5 Strikers consists of walking around a new town as Joker, the nameless protagonist and leader of the Phantom Thieves. ![]() But the combat is only a part of what makes Strikers fun.īetween combat missions, I could swear I was playing Persona 5 Image: Omega Force and P-Studio/Atlus It looks and sounds just like Persona 5, but instead of the turn-based JRPG combat of its source material, Strikers offers a Musou style of combat - combo-based action combat against an army of enemies, like the Dynasty Warriors series or Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The multiplatform releases for Shin Megami Tensei 3and Persona 5 Strikers could be testing the water for bigger things to come. Here's hoping that this leads to Atlus reviving its old catalog of incredible games, especially if it brings all of the Persona games to Nintendo Switch.Polygon Recommends is our way of endorsing our favorite games. It feels like Atlus has been leaving money on the table by restricting its games to a single platform, but now it seems that that is changing. A multiplatform release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim would be especially welcome, as it's one of the best games of the previous generation and it deserves to be experienced by people who don't own a PS4. All of these are locked to older systems and it would amazing to see them revived on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and the Xbox Series X/S. The company also asked in the survey if fans are interested in ports of Persona 3/FES, Persona 4/Golden, Persona 5 Royal, Shin Megami Tensei IV/Apocalypse, the Digital Devil Saga games, the Devil Summoner games, the Etrian Odyssey games, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, the Persona Q games, and the Devil Survivor games. It's interesting to note that Atlus has a number of platforms in mind for possible ports, including PC, smartphones, and the Xbox Series X/S. Fans have already received the sequel on multiple platforms, in the form of Persona 5 Strikers, but they might soon be able to play the original as well. Notably, the survey also asks fans if they want ports of games like Persona 5 for the Nintendo Switch. The survey asks fans their opinions on smartphone games, their playing habits during the pandemic, and their preference between digital and physical games.
